Please Meet the Generous 2008 Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Sponsors
Limousin
Herman Farms ~ Chris Herman Hastings, MN on behalf of the MN Limousin Association.
We are very excited and proud to be a sponsor of the Limousin heifer for the 2008 Expo and Beef Experience Program. Our farm is located between Hastings and Afton along the St. Croix river. It is family owned and operated with everybody participating; Chris and Jamie with cattle management, Jay with crop management, Neal and Bridget with construction and lawn care management, with everything overseen by dad and mom (Steve and Becky). We have been active in the Limousin breed for eleven years and strive for quality, not quantity. We use an extensive AI program to produce quality, functional cattle that work in the industry for show and for the pasture. Chris & Jamie have recently been appointed as youth advisers for the MN Limousin Association and are very excited. We wish the best of luck to the youth who is awarded our 2008 donation heifer.
South Devon
Northern States South Devon Association.
The Northern States South Devon Association (NSSDA) was formed 15 years ago by a small group of South Devon breeders in central-Minnesota. An active and enthusiastic group of South Devon producers from six states currently promote South Devon cattle throughout the Midwest, by participating in farm shows, 4-H and FFA activities, Jr. shows and livestock events. A strong Jr. association participates each year at the MN Beef Expo. Members from the association have strongly supported the MYBEP by donating a South Devon heifer each year to a deserving junior. All four of the past recipients of South Devon heifers are active members in the North American South Devon Junior Association. They have participated in the annual 'Junior Nationals' and have become an important part of the NSSDA.
In 2007 a group of the members within the Northern States Association decided to combine donated funds to make available to the winner of the MYBEP, so the recipient of the South Devon heifer could purchase the animal out of the South Devon sale. This allowed the recipient the opportunity to choose from the sale offering and also gave them an educational experience by providing them with performance data and pedigree information to aid in their selection of an animal. The NSSDA will give the 2008 MYBEP recipient of the South Devon heifer the same opportunity.
The NSSDA members are proud to have been a part of the Minnesota Beef Expo for the past nine years and especially honored to have been a part of the MYBEP since its inception.
Hereford
Frederickson Hereford Farm ~ Mark, Mary Kay & Sarah Frederickson, Starbuck MN on behalf of the MN Hereford Association.
Frederickson Hereford Farm is in its third generation of raising registered Herefords in west central Minnesota. FHF runs about 200 breeding age females that produce registered Hereford breeding stock, F1 Hereford/Angus replacement females and registered Angus seedstock. FHF has recently expanded to the west with the addition of their son Nathan and his family operating FHF West in South Dakota. FHF also works with their seedstock customers on a buy back program and retains ownership on its steer calves and feeds them for the Certified Hereford Beef program.
Simmental
Thesing Riverside Ranch ~ Eric & Darla, Eric & Jennifer Thesing, Carlos MN on behalf of the MN Simmental Association.
Eric and Darcy Thesing live on Thesing’s Riverside Ranch near Carlos, MN with their children Eric and Jennifer. They own Central Marine and Sports, also in Carlos, and Darcy works in the lab department at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. They purchased their first registered Simmental cows in 1986, and shortly after, a registered bull. They’ve built their herd, and crossbred from most of Eric’s dad’s herd to purebred stock, and have incorporated some half blood breeding stock. The newest addition is Titus, a half blood bull from Hook Farms. Between them they keep about 100 cows and about 15 heifers each year. Neither of the Thesings were involved with showing cattle until their kids joined 4-H. They have enjoyed the road trips to the AJSA and open shows, and appreciate all the knowledge & friendships they’ve acquired by participating in both the MN and National associations. They feel it is important to continue to promote the breed, and to continue their involvement by getting other kids involved with agriculture. They are very honored to be a part of the 2008 MYBEP as Simmental is the featured breed.
Charolais
Highview Charolais Farm, Carter Feuchtenberger, Morris MN on behalf of the Minnesota Charolais Association.
It all started in 1985 in search for a 4-H hefier prospect for my older brother Doug. Growing up on the farm our dad always used Charolais bulls behind his commercial cows. Dad said; "Charolais make an excellent cross for their muscle, growth, and carcass traits." The Charolais’ great characteristics and dad’s interest in the breed influenced us all. There isn't a much better way to show people what the Charolais have to offer other than leading them around the ring. This heifer sparked interest in more than just Doug. My little brother, Mike, and I decided to follow in our big brothers foot steps. In 1996 the three of us expanded Doug's 4-H project into a business with over 120 cows we now call Highview Charolais Farm.
Our cow herd is highly influenced by LT Wyoming Wind 4020; the number one AI sire in Charolais history as well as LT Western Spur, a Genex Masterpiece Sire and the 8 star feed efficient bull. We also use LT Assertion. 1277 one of the breeds, top calving-ease, muscle and eye appealing bulls. All of these sires have produced several champions. We offer you these great genetics and other top AI sires at Highview Charolais Farm's annual production sale, always held on the first Thursday in April; where we sell our top bulls and some outstanding replacement females.
Our dedication at Highview is to quality, honesty and fairness thru God. Our focus is to continually strive to improve and increase the genetics of our herd. These genetics provide you with calving-ease, excellent weaning performance as well as exceptional feed lot gains and superb carcass quality. They are also packed with admirable traits of disposition, soundness and eye appeal.

Tom is currently the President of the MN. Shorthorn Assn. and has conducted cattle fitting and showing clinics. Joanie designs and puts together the MN. Shorthorn directory.
Jane has shown cattle and sheep in the '50s and Tom & Joanie continue to show at the State Fair for 34 consecutive years in 2008. Wildwood Farm is proud to be part of the MN Youth Beef Experience.
Angus
Freeburg Ridge Farm, Joe Hammell, Caledonia MN on behalf of the Minnesota Angus Association.
Freeburg Ridge Angus Farm is home to 300 Registered Angus cows. AI breeding is used extensively as each female is mated indidvidually. An annual bull sale is held on the first Tuesday in April each year, with the fifteenth sale held this year. Females are sold by private treaty in the fall of each year. The average EPD's for the herd are in the top 10% of the Angus breed.
Joe and Diana Hammell and their children Abe, Jed, Luke and Katrina have all been involved in the operation. Three grandchildren, Joey, Theron and J.T. are already finding an affinity for Angus cattle.
Gary Klinski is operations manager and is assisted by Delbert Stehr and Joe Rask. Joe's extended family is involved as well as Joe's brother Ed lives on the home farm nearby. The cattle roam on the hills of "Bluff Country" in SE Minnesota. Both Wisconsin and Iowa can be seen from the farm as this herd is in the corner of the state.
Joe was president of the MN Angus Assn. from 2005- 07 and has been a delegate to the American Angus Assn. annual meeting several times. Visitors are always welcome to the farm. joerhm@acegroup.cc
