The Expo continues to develop around youth activities, including a judging contest, showmanship contest and junior show. 4-H, FFA and junior breed members also have a wonderful opportunity to select next year’s project at the breed sales.
The Expo again featured a Market Beef Show, Prospect Market Calf Show and a Breeding Heifer Show. This year’s Junior Show had over 550 head of livestock competing for over $10,000 in prize money!

The sixth year of the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP) awarded heifer calves to seven FFA and 4-H youth from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Winners were chosen from a pool of 50 entries. Such an overwhelming response is a sincere tribute to youth who are interested in the future of the beef industry! Each winner is responsible for raising, breeding and maintaining complete records on care of the animal while providing monthly progress reports to the donor and the Minnesota Beef Expo.

Over 200 juniors competed in the 2009 Junior Showmanship. The six age divisions ranged from grades 4 & under all the way up to high school grads thru age 21, with an average of 20 participants in each division. Thanks to the generous sponsorships from the Minnesota Corn Growers and Minnesota State Fair Foundation, savings bonds were awarded to the 1st – 4th place winners in each division. Thanks also to Andis Company, Inc. for kindly donating clippers.
2009 Showmanship Results
Friday afternoon paid host to 16 teams and over 48 individuals for the judging contest. The Minnesota Beef Expo is an excellent venue for juniors to show off their beef cattle evaluation skills. This added along with decision making, public speaking and observation skills makes for a multi-faceted learning experience that continues to draw great participation.

NEW! Youth Knowledge Bowl Contest! Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association sponsored this new activity on Thursday afternoon. There were seven teams participating in two age divisions. The winning senior team won a trip to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Quiz Bowl Contest to be held in San Antonio, TX January 27-30th 2010!

The Minnesota Beef Industry has a new four-member team of youth to educate consumers and promote beef across the state. The Minnesota Beef Spokesperson Team Competition was held on Thursday night in conjunction with the Beef Expo. The senior winner was Maddy Ruble, 17, of Albert Lea, Minn. The other members of the Beef Spokesperson Team are Sara Colombe, 18, of Little Falls; Caleb Krusemark,18, of Trimont; and junior winner Jenna White, 13, of Wadena. The contest consisted of each contestant completing a mock media interview, a mock classroom presentation and a written response to a recent news article negative to the beef industry.
The Minnesota Beef Spokesperson Program consists of a team of youth who work throughout the year to increase beef consumption and dispel myths and misconceptions held by consumers and peers. The program is funded in part by the Beef Check Off and sponsored by the Minnesota CattleWomen and Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association.
Last year’s senior winner, Kristen Wingert of Plainview, received a $500 scholarship at the MN Beef Expo Supreme Row Event held on Saturday, October 17. The scholarship is sponsored by the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association and was presented by Dar Giess, 1st Vice President of the Cattlemen’s Association. The scholarship recognizes Kristen’s work and dedication throughout the year speaking on behalf of Minnesota beef producers.
