Junior Activities

Youth activities continue to be the focus of the Minnesota Beef Expo.  Providing these learning opportunities ensures strong leadership skills for the future of the beef industry.

Junior Show

Last year was our biggest junior show yet with 562 head exhibited.  We look forward to an even bigger year in 2011!

Last year, more than 200 juniors competed in the 2010 Junior Showmanship. The six age divisions ranged from grades 4 & under, up to high school grads thru age 21. Showmanship will be held on Friday, October 22 at 3 p.m.

The 2011 schedule will continue the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience (MYBEP) page designed to aid youth with their start in the beef cattle business. The program awards heifer calves to FFA and 4-H youth from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Each winner is responsible for raising, breeding and maintaining complete records on care of the animal while providing monthly progress reports to the original owner and the Minnesota Beef Expo.

The Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP) Seminar will be held on Thursday, October, 20. Any youth who applied to the 2011 MYBEP are eligible to attend this workshop on nutrition, cattle breeding, handling, financial needs, transportation, and breed profiles. These sessions are developed to enhance a junior's ability to begin and prosper with their own herd of cattle and will be presented by industry and educational professionals along with leading cattlemen.

Youth Knowledge Bowl

Sponsored by Minnesota State Cattlemen's Association

The Youth Knowledge Bowl will be held on Thursday afternoon in the Warner Coliseum.  The Minnesota State Cattlemen will sponsor this event, again this year. The top team will win a trip to the National Contest in January.

Youth Judging Contest

Sponsored by Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation

The Minnesota Beef Expo is an excellent venue for juniors to show off their judging skills and their knowledge of the cattle industry.  The Youth Judging Contest will be held on the morning of Friday, October 21.  With dozens of teams and individuals participating, it continues to be an activity that many enjoy participating in.

Minnesota Beef Spokesperson Team

Sponsored by Minnesota Cattlewomen

The Beef Spokesperson Competition will again be held in conjunction with the Beef Expo. The competition will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 20 at the CHS Miracle of Birth Center. The winner will present at the Supreme Row Selection Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 22.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: BEEF EXPO STYLE

Sponsored by the Minnesota Soybean Growers

Could You Be the Next Champion?

Got your fitting supplies? Check! Got a washed and dried heifer or steer? Check! Enjoy working together? Got a team of four youth between the ages of 9 to 21? Check! If you meet these qualifications you should compete to be the winner of the 2011 Extreme Makeover: Beef Expo Style!

The Extreme Makeover: Beef Expo Style is a popular event in its third year at the Minnesota Beef Expo. This competition incorporates several skills into its competition. Each team is given 30 minutes to groom a heifer or steer for the show ring to demonstrate their fitting skills. Afterwards, the animal will be reviewed by a panel of four judges and team members will be asked questions. Judging will be based on the following criteria: ability to fit, equipment and supplies organization, participation of each team member, overall effectiveness and knowledge and response to questions. The University of Minnesota Beef Team hosts this event and it is sponsored by the Minnesota Soybean Growers.
